Article from the Portland Press Herald, Nov 24, 1939.

Other stories from the time note how confusing the situation became. Federal employees had the day off on Nov 23, but most state employees were working. State liquor stores were closed for both Thanksgivings.

I read this saying that Democrats should have a plan to deal with the negative consequences of AI, which seems reasonable.

Though to get a more comprehensive picture of the benefit for Scarborough, you’d want to figure out the extra cost of things like traffic, and work out how much of the spending is staying in the local economy rather than to shareholders

To be fair, the study was commissioned by the Scarborough Downs developers. It’s much easier to see it as a benefit to Scarborough if people drive from other towns to spend money there instead.

I agree the benefit to the state is more negligible.

I think using the UK poverty measure (below 60% of median household income), the equivalent rate in the US would be 23% of kids in poverty in 2023. So the UK is still worse.

The Uk uses a relative poverty measure (below 60% of median household income) so it’s not directly comparable to the US stat, which is based on a set income level. (Still bad, obviously)

Border crossing numbers update - the US data is delayed due to the shutdown, so here are some numbers from Statistics Canada. They do a nice job breaking out where travelers come from as well, so you can see Canadian visitors are driving the declining border crossing numbers #mepolitics

Just as a statistical point - the total number of border crossings was down 26% in October. That number includes all nationalities, including a number of Americans returning from Canada. Statistics from the Canadian border agency suggest that visits by Canadians specifically are down closer to 40%

Weather is actually very low on the list of reasons people give the census bureau (this includes all moves; the responses for just interstate moves would probably be higher)

I don’t think I said immigration alone is the solution. I do think it’s a critical part of the solution. And my main point was that Trump is making an existing problem worse.

The reference to M4A suggested to me that she was endorsing a version of a single-payer system.

I agree that a public option would be good if it’s designed well. Some of the state-level “public options” pay rates so high they’re barely an improvement on private plans.

I understood “a universal health care plan” to mean a single program that provides universal health care.

It could be read as “a plan to get to universal health care” which is more like Democratic Party orthodoxy and less specific.

Certainly we should make education more affordable and accessible, including medical school - but that also can’t be the only solution. For one it takes time to train doctors. And as the article notes, we’ve relied on immigrant doctors since at least the 1970s

Ok sure 😅

“Reflecting this view of the federal law, she signed the petition, but will not be involved in the state referendum campaign because, as a federal official, she does not advocate on state ballot issues,” Collins spokesperson Blake Kernen wrote in a Monday email."

Can't help but wonder if there's a connection to this super PAC promising to spend $4 million, led by the most vocal opponent of trans kids in Maine schools.

Notably, the citizens' initiative here doesn't just restrict access to sports, but requires restricting access to bathrooms as well -something that has been settled law in Maine for more than a decade.

In that time, I don't think there's been any problem arising from the policy!
