These are the 3 collections I will be revisiting this Christmas as the dark nights draw in. Enjoying festive onions around an open fire...

'Psycho' should be recognised as a Christmas film? All of the action takes place between 11th & 21st December. Anyone fancy a seasonal break at the Bates Motel?

The toy rabbit belonging to Norman Bates. An innocent, neglected plaything? Or a demonic entity responsible for all the madness that followed? Study that expression closely...

Uncle Silas (1968).
"They are digging my grave!"

An episode of the 'Mystery & Imagination' TV series, this could be the best adaptation of one of my favourite gothic novels. The ultimate 'my family are secretly my enemies' text, with all roads leading back to the old dark house of the past.

The most frightening finale to any horror film? Henry Daniell cabs it up with the ghost of Boris Karloff in The Body Snatcher (1945).

Toby (1995).

This episode of the 'Chiller' TV series seems to have been inspired by 'Don't Look Now'. Grieving parents have mixed feelings about trying to contact their dead child. Never has Martin Clunes playing with model trains seemed creepier.

The Hanging Balloons (2023).

I am not sure exactly what this episode of 'Junji Ito Maniac' is saying about teen suicide but the imagery is striking & bizarre & I liked it a lot. A sort of 'inflatable vampire' story.

Good Boy (2025).

This is the kind of 'Lassie' film I would have loved to have seen as a kid. Decent folk horror/disease allegory from a dog's eye view. Algernon Blackwood reimagines 'Benji'?

What Have You Done To Solange? (1972).

Just who is the title accusing? The male characters blame the girls they have "never understood...only 16 but surrounded by secret boyfriends, petty jealousies, sex orgies & lesbian games". Or could the issue be the patriarchy?

Black Belly Of The Tarantula (1971).

An 'acupuncture horror' that anticipates Takashi Miike's 'Audition'. "The tarantula is a terrible insect" an alleged scientific expert informs us. Actually, I believe it is an arachnid?

Out Of The Blue (1980).

What can you do when your mum is a drug addict & your dad is, well, Dennis Hopper? Only one option - "Subvert Normality"! This & Christiane F are my favourite 'coming of age' films.

Sister Midnight (2024).

This is the best vampire film I have seen in a while. A reluctant bride moves to Mumbai & becomes drained by an unhappy marriage, mindless job & non-existent social life. City sickness as dark comedy, with some stopmotion scenes.

Grey Gardens (1975).

Reality TV from the old days, when the focus was on interesting people. There is the usual empathy/exploitation debate, but I don't see any mental illness here, more the impact of social estrangement. Paul Morrissey meets Ciao Manhattan?
