Like, upzone fucking Staten Island! Upzone southern Brooklyn! Upzone the northern Bronx neighborhoods!

I’m not saying don’t build new housing or upzone in the Upper East Side, I’m just saying some of this is cult thinking and isn’t really in touch with reality.

and 2. I just feel like some of this comes down to our unwillingness to demand new training lines. The talking point that we should maximize around only the train lines that exist is kind of conservative.

1. There’s a bunch of places in NYC that sit on the end of train lines but have truly dumpy single family housing. And the trains go in full to Manhattan in the morning and full to Canarsie at night, but the return trains are half empty. That’s at least as big a waste.

Even down to the talking point of “this is the best place for transit”. I’ve got two problems with that:

The problem with American housing is not that it’s hard to put new housing in Manhattan. It’s that it’s hard to build more Manhattans elsewhere.

I don’t know. Go do a Google image search of Upper East Side and tell me that you think there isn’t benefit to maintaining old, weird buildings.

I guess the answer is no then.
