Beautiful. The proustian rush I got from the guy’s copies of cassettes I knew so well: Substance, Introspective, Standing On A Beach. The thrill of turning over and fast-forwarding and getting to JUST the point where the song started.

Loved the cassingle. The music we had on tape was probably the stuff we played the most, right? The Walkman, in the bedroom, at friends’, more easily/readily swapped and taken to parties. Went to a mate’s birthday recently where a guy DJ’d on cassette only. Total joy.

Fwiw I haven’t read Audition but I did really enjoy Intimacies. Sinister and clever and kind of unsettling.

Oh and in my tbr pile is Voss by Patrick White. I love to read literature from the country I’m in when travelling, so I’ll also recommend The Tree Of Man by Patrick White.

I’ve not been very good at getting to new stuff, but fiction I’ve loved recently includes:
The Maniac by Benjamin Labatut
Latecomers by Anita Brookner
The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro
Real Life by Brandon Taylor
Hot Milk by Deborah Levy

They were so good live around then. Total energy, a frontline of galacticos. Thrilling.

I’m sorry but the best JAMC/MBV mashup was my brain as the 15 yr old body that housed it stood dazed after witnessing the Rollercoaster tour.
