“That won’t slow them down for long,” Jase said. “Run!” Lizz instructed. The group started to sprint again. None of them noticed, at first, that they were only four in number then. Not until they heard a loud clank and Phan cries out. “Ow! Fuck!” They turned back around to find her face down on the floor, trying in vain to crawl along with just her right arm and leg. “Phan, c’mon!” Lizz shouted back. “Let’s go!” Tears formed in Phan’s eyes, dripping to the floor beneath her. “I can’t. I can’t move.” “What?” Lizz rushed back to her fallen comrade’s side. “This isn’t funny,” said Jase. “She isn’t joking,” said Lizz. “What the hell was that?” “It was an EMP. It shorted the doors and hopefully some of their equipment…” “An EMP?!” Phan screamed. “I’m a cyborg!” Jase couldn’t swallow all of a sudden. “What?”

In the darkness and quiet, punctuated only by the sounds of their boots scraping against the metal rails, they were near startled off their feet when Phan’s voice came over the comms. “Guys? I’m in!” “Great,” said Jase. “I don’t suppose you can come get us?” “Are you guys not following me?” “We were spotted,” said Lizz. “We couldn’t get to the other launch bays.” “Well, I’m pretty far from where you were, and I got kind of turned around. That track went on for a while, but I’m probably at least a few kilometers away, and it’s not like this thing can fit back through the tunnel.” “Hey, what’s it like, anyway?” asked Jase. Phan sat in the dark cockpit of one of the H.O.R.N. There was little dedicated illumination, just a few dull strips above and to her sides that had slowly come up when she’d slid inside. “Uh, it’s big. Definitely big.” “Yeah but how big? What’s it look like?” “Kind of like a guy?” “A guy?” “I dunno how else to describe it. The loader thing put me in the chest… type… area.”

“Alright, well, any friend of yours. C’mon ‘round the back.” He had to relinquish his grasp on Trainer’s hand to wave them back and guide them down a long corridor towards his office. While the place bore some resemblance to the orbital ports around Kaia, it didn’t seem to be anywhere near as well kept. The lights weren’t as bright, the walls not as polished, and there seemed to be boxes stacked haphazardly: not enough to impede egress, but enough to make the place look untidy. There was also a distinct lack of personnel. It seemed to just be Vezen, and now Trainer and Phan. Once in Vezen’s office – more boxes, these definitely obstructing movement – Vezen took his place behind the desk. He hadn’t even taken a seat before pivoting to address his guests. “So, what’re you looking for way out here?” “Friends,” Trainer said flatly. “Huh. Well, you’re a little late for that.” Trainer’s brow raised on one side. “Is that right?” “What does that mean?” asked Phan. “It sounds like Vezen’s already been turned. Just like Trumane.” “No. No. I’m loyal. A hundred percent. But that’s the problem.” Vezen’s fingers moved down the front of his shirt, unfastening each button in turn as they went. “They could tell you were coming to me for help. They ‘reached out’ alright.” Once enough of the buttons were undone, he gripped the placket and pulled the shirt open to expose his chest. At the center of it was a glowing, swirling, bubbling wound.

The man at the controls allowed himself a bemused smile as the warning light on the communications console lit up. His heavy finger swiftly found the activation switch. “Attention approaching craft: you are not running a transponder signal.” “No I’m not.” “Please activate your transponder and identify yourself.” “I’m not doing either of those things.” The faceless voice emanated a grave concern. “Please be aware that you are approaching a government installation without identifying your vessel.” “I’m very aware of what I’m doing.” “Without identification, we must treat you as a hostile. Either activate your transponder or do not approach.” The ship flew onward. “Final warning.” Was that a hint of panic in the speaker’s voice? “Break off your approach or we will take defensive action.” “No you won’t.” “What do you…?” A second voice came on the line. “They’re not working.” “How?” asked the first. “We have so many guns.” “And none will fire at that ship.” “Is it a systemwide problem, or…?” A third voice broke in. “System checks out. They just won’t lock on that ship.” The first voice again, “Well hurry up and figure it out. He’s going to… and he’s already landed. Crap.”

Chapter 45 Who Flipped the Vocabulary? Éponine’s fingers reached around the torrent of water, finding the warm metal hexagon affixed to the fire plug. She could feel the roughness of the metal and the flaking of the thick layers of paint rubbing off onto her skin as she turned. The water quickly dwindled to a trickle before stopping completely. She was met with several rounds of jeers – not to mention some rather course language – from the dripping youngsters who’d been splashing through the spray. “Don’t you know there’s a drought on? Global warming and all that.” Her hands went into her pockets as she and Jason headed towards the station house. “Damn, that was a little harsh. Kids just gotta be kids sometimes.” “They’ll live.” She looked back at the dispersing group of children. “They all will.”

No mention of the work "crystal" in any of my WIPs, so a magic stone will have to do.
The clerk backed up, praying there was enough room behind him to get him and his musty robe out of Trainer’s reach. There was not, but salvation – or at least a distraction – came as an older man burst from the curtain, his arm pulled back, his stubby fingers clutching a colorful, shiny stone. “Here’s your bloody egg!” The stone was loosed, the old man’s aim true, as the polished rock flung straight towards Trainer’s face. His hand effortlessly jutted out, snatching the stone from the air. “Oh.” The old man chuckled nervously. “Ha. Well done. Well done.” The clerk shuffled back along the dirt that passed for a street, spinning to get clear of the stall and sprint. His progress was halted as the older man grabbed tight hold of his coat sleeve. “Oh, don’t be so squeamish.” “He’s insane! He’s going to kill us!” “Only if we give him reason to.” Trainer examined the oblong stone that rested on his palm. It had no singular color, instead circling through vivid swirls of any and every hue imaginable. Some of that was a trick of the light, but there was definitely a detectable twist of something winding its way through. “This is tainted.” “It is not.” Trainer’s nostrils flared at the old man’s words. “It’s hard to get supplies out here. The recipe calls for dragon scale but, I don’t know if you know how touchy the queen is about her dragons. Sometimes we have to make substitutions.” “It’s impure.” “It still works.”

The panels in front of her lit up. “Uh…” “What’s wrong?” Jase asked. “These controls don’t look like anything I’ve ever seen before. Phan, you got yours moving. What am I supposed to do? Just start pushing stuff?” “Holy crap, no!” Phan yelled. “Don’t just start pushing stuff! This thing is super dangerous and you’re right next to a giant pit!” Lizz looked out the forward viewer and saw Phan’s H.O.R.N. battling against the oncoming soldiers. Combat data, spelled out in glowing lettering and symbols, danced across the window; some scrolled along the bottom, others tracked along with the visible vehicles and weaponry. Some tanks had started rolling in; Phan engaged those just as readily as the foot soldiers. “Well what did you do?!” Lizz asked. “I don’t know,” said Phan. “It just… made sense to me. It’s pretty intuitive.” Lizz studied the various controls in front of her: rows upon rows of buttons, levers, touchpads, switches, trackballs, and control sticks. “It is not intuitive. There’s either too few directional controls or way too many, and so many buttons. Wait… do all these things have the same control layout? Or… is there, like, an easy mode I can activate?” “I don’t know! I’m kind of busy!” “Right. Sorry.” She returned her attention to the many panels in front of her. “What about instructions. Does it have those?”

Funny enough, not for a while. Val (MC of the Crowns series) has hair that grows in an unnatural platinum blonde color (due to genetic manipulation as a baby), but in the 4th book in the series (currently a WIP) there are at least 2 characters who cut/dye their hair to match her style.
Val, the main character of the series of Crowns science-fantasy novels. She is a young women with striking, angular features and short, platinum blonde hair swept back. In this image, she is wearing a black uniform with a white collar and trim, against a black background, with severe shadows.

As to why I’m here.” “I think you know why.” Her mouth, already dry within, went flat along its exterior. “I think I do, as well, but if I’m wrong, that would be really embarrassing.” “Your lieutenant recommended you for the special operative program. People agreed, all the way up the chain of command, until your name landed on my desk.” She glanced around the room. “I have a desk,” he said. “In my office. It’s a different room.” “Of course, sir. And…” One of his gigantic paws came up. “Before you accept, I want to be sure you fully know what you’ll be committing to. Special operatives are highly regarded, but a lot is asked of them.”

Like, how do they put wear and tear on them? Do robot feet… they’re flexible, right?” Éponine looked down. She raised her foot from the cushy carpeting. It curled. “See, okay.” Brie gestured proudly at her. “Probably don’t need arch support though. I wouldn’t guess that would be a worry.” “Got it.” Jan tapped her temple. “Durable, stylish. Okay for running, maybe.” Evangeline swiped at her phone. “Cool. Cool cool.” “Oh,” Brie perked up, “and see if you have anything with a snake on it.”
