At what point does an RPG become a board game, and vice versa?

There are some games that are absolutely a board game, and some. That are absolutely an RPG.

But there are more and more that straddle the line so closely that they sit in both camps.

This year I did 44 roundups of indie games I thought looked neat on my blog, not counting any posts on individual games as I completed them. Many not on Steam

And I did 30 roundups of various blog posts I enjoyed reading this year

Made bread, ate bread, had a curry, discovered there are official solo Carcassonne rules, and am now about to sit down for a Mage Knight solo blitz conquest.

As years go this one is starting off well.

Incentive discourse?

Fun.

Thats an incentive for you. The best one, in fact.

There are exactly 2 types of ttrpg discourse.

1. Shitpost that someone took seriously and it snowballs.
2. Misunderstood thing that snowballs.

I do not know if I have ever known there to be much useful or insightful discourse, just people with strong opinions on things that are likely made up.

2026 might be the year of abandoning a career in tech and becoming a childrens magician.

You don't have to be internet famous to make a game, you can just make one.

You don't have to sell a ton of it to prove it's good.

Nothing else I do in my life ever again will bring anyone as much joy as my 19 year old nephew just shew when I did sponge ball magic for him.

I played Mage Knight. It was a lot of fun. I had a very nice time.

That is all.

Also I am not going to get me farcical Christmas murder mystery game "Douglas Fir is Dead" done this year, so look out for that next year I guess.
December 22, 2025 at 8:46 PM
Can I learn and master an award winning rope magic routine in just a few days to amuse kids at Christmas?

No.

Has that stopped me trying?

Also no.

So search is broken, but there is hope: non-general purpose search engines.

Search engines that hyper focus on one specific topic.

Conjuring Archive is an excellent example of this. You type in a magic thing, it returns a bunch of results including author, description, and publication source.

I think it would be cool if games that used AI had to include a prominent label on the front of the box that read "the people who made this game hat artists, and the wider creative community, and are working towards the end of artistic endeavour"

Eldest was outraged because this old Zelda game lost his save. Time to change the battery!

It is incredible how long these things last. This is the original battery I just pulled out, and it was working some time earlier this year.

I can't imagine any tech being this reliable now, or repairable.

So, what are the best play by post RPGs that can be played super slow, like shooting an email back and forth once a week, that really lend themselves to farcical situations.

There have to be things I am missing.

High society, but play by post.

On a plus side I have read a lot of great books this year, many of which are books of magic, the rest of which are ghost stories.

So that is fun.

A friend popped in over the weekend and we were chatting. They asked me "seen any good films this year?" And I paused and thought.

Then it dawned on me that I have not watched any films this year other than the Minecraft movie, and that was crap.
