4. Conventional measures of population ageing, such as the old-age dependency ratio, are often used as proxy indicators of economic dependency. Other measures can provide a more nuanced picture.

2. Ageing is an irreversible global trend. It is the inevitable result of the demographic transition – the trend towards longer lives and smaller families – that is taking place even in countries with relatively youthful populations.

This includes Northern and sub-Saharan Africa and
Western Asia.

1. The number of people aged 65 years or older worldwide is projected to more than double, rising from 761 million in 2021 to 1.6 billion in 2050. The number of people aged 80 years or older is growing even faster.

We must (and can) prepare for the future that awaits us in the next 10-20 years.

Ageing is one of the topics that keeps resurfacing in our national conversation.

While it is something to celebrate, there is a lot of concern about the implications it has for our health and social care sectors.
