I would love it if #StarWarsFateoftheOldRepublic gave both narrative and (secret) mechanical consequences to using the Dark Side, as the ability to freely use powers from either ""side"" without affecting your alignment is perhaps the greatest sin (friction with George's intent) of the old games.

I'm very excited to see how Fate of the Old Republic will interpret The Force.

I'm very excited to see how Fate of the Old Republic will interpret The Force.

Perhaps the most striking invocation of the theme of Fate in KotOR 2 is when the motives of [spoilers!] are revealed. These motives are, I believe, shared by Baylan Skoll, in search of a power to break the cycle of history in a very specific way. The Great Mothers' names are not a coincidence.

The broader point is that the Jedi TRY to be better, they try to be wise and kind and just. They try to love people, even enemies. They try to learn from their mistakes, to grow beyond their masters in the long arc of the moral universe.

The broader point is that the Jedi TRY to be better, they try to be wise and kind and just. They try to love people, even enemies. They try to learn from their mistakes, to grow beyond their masters in the long arc of the moral universe.

Despite the Council being wise, the individuals compassionate & well-intended, the mere fact the Jedi CAN do this kind of thing is the problem.

When Jedi make mistakes, it can lead to disaster.

Palpatine was not often a happy man.
He was gleeful when zapping people, or planning a genocide, but most of the time he was terrified of losing his power.
Which eventually of course he did.

In Star Wars nobody is wholly immune to the desires which can lead so easily to the Dark Side.
