It does make sense, tho. If he was passé blanc on too of everything else, it really never would have been meant for him to find happiness. And his untimely demise was REALLY inevitable (which was probably the point of the book anyway)

However, I almost exclusively read Black authors and largely steer away from white authors as a whole at this point. So idk.
