NIMBYism is a huge cultural problem. It's been empowered for years where it becomes normalized into law, and the default of what we're used to.

We need to end this culture of thinking we have the right to say what happens on other people's property, and who gets to live in our neighbourhood.

Thanks for the housing crisis, Ontario.

It's a clear contradiction.

We saw this play out on Monday when there was a modest small apartment proposed steps away from McKernan Belgravia LRT station.

Yet, Knack and Cartmell voted against it. If you can't even accept low rise here, or even 8 units, how are you going to accept 8 storeys?

Saying that you want more priority growth areas and density near transit would mean allowing more 6+ storey buildings in very much the exact same neighbourhoods that have consumed all of the air in the infill debate.

Making up for killing midblock rowhousing requires a more liberal plan than this 👇

@andrewknack.bsky.social has said verbally that he thinks a way forward is to build even more around transit and priority growth areas, making up for decreasing midblock rowhousing.

But, this idea doesn't make it into his plan. Why?

To be fair, I also want to say that everything here also applies to @timcartmell.bsky.social who appears to actually have an extremely similar plan.

A propos, if it is indeed BC-style as some have been saying, it would be huge. Rosedale upzoned for midrise if true.

Simplified from my second latest post but here's a somewhat comparable view. Sorry about the messed up x-axis, made this at like midnight.

For the nerds out there (yes I know you follow me), here's the cumulative distribution.

I also included an interactive map to explore where the 7-8plexes are being built.

Yup, they are all in this part

Here's some selected neighbourhoods for no particular reason whatsover 😉

I didn't hear one person use the word "NIMBY" at the public hearing, except the folks opposing infill who went to great lengths to clarify that they're not NIMBYs.

Of course they're not. #yeg #yegcc

I am the worst person to fly with. Just this year I have had:

1. A plane crash in YYZ when my connection is through there.
2. Wrong amount of fuel loaded.
3. Diversion to Calgary.
4. Broken bridge.
5. Mechanical issue cancellation.
6. Thunderstorm cancellation forces this cursed itinerary.

> our community league has 446 members, representing almost one half of the households in the neighbourhood

Oh my god, he admit it!

Another look at building permits for 7-8 unit rowhouses in the RS zone by ward. Half of the wards with 0 or single digits permitted so far. #yeg #yegcc

Councillor @michaeljanz.bsky.social's motion to downzone large swaths of Edmonton passes the committee to a public hearing on June 30.

Horrible, cynical motion pandering to a vocal minority of NIMBYs to win votes in an election year.

Fml. Horrible choice and signaling.

The mass at exactly 8 suggests that it is serving demand at that level and that on the contrary, if the cap were limited we'd see even more units built per lot. I think the number of units being 8 is a huge driver of the additional supply in mature neighbourhoods.

Btw @amarjeetsohiyeg.bsky.social bb I have your graph by building type right here.
June 4, 2025 at 1:57 AM
@amarjeetsohiyeg.bsky.social asks how much we would lose if we were to limit to 6 units midblock. The answer: a lot. #yegcc

For the record on @michaeljanz.bsky.social 's question on SFH and duplexes, there are almost equal amounts of SFH redevelopments and duplexes in mature neighbourhoods even at the 2025 rates.
