When the Trump admin booted its own IRS commissioner -- who was just two months into the job -- one of the reasons was because he clashed with officials over approving this data-sharing.

It was another WaPo scoop.
IRS, White House clashed over immigrants’ data before tax chief was ousted
The Trump administration’s move to push out IRS Commissioner Billy Long came after the agency said it couldn’t release some information on taxpayers suspected of being here illegally.

My @washingtonpost.com colleagues and I scooped on this arrangement back in February. It feels like a decade ago.

Originally IRS officials balked at this arrangement. Then one by one they either resigned or were forced out of office.
DHS asks IRS for addresses of people believed to be in U.S. illegally
Immigration enforcement officials sought home addresses for 700,000 people and also asked for skilled auditors to investigate businesses.

They’ll always be legal tender. Or until Congress passes a law to make them defunct. Still good to use. Just no new ones.

You mean the world to us. Thank you.

Why would I credit this? All of my reporting was independent and I obtained this recording separately from the Beacon.

When I tell you *a lot* went into this story, I mean it.

- Recordings of internal meetings
- Leaked audio from phone calls
- Internal chat logs
- Drafts of secret policy papers
- Interviews with nearly two dozen sources

Thank you for supporting journalism that does this kind of work.

The war inside Heritage has been described to me as the start of the post-Trump civil war within the GOP.

Sources told me it’s not really about antisemitism. And I think that’s true.

But antisemitism animated a lot of how this blew up.

The emphasis on family policy is very evident in Heritage’s policy work.

One draft paper we obtained proposed a “Manhattan Project” for more babies.

A subsequent draft floats giving straight married couples an extra “half vote” in federal elections for each of their children.

Reporting this story, I heard near universal concern from Heritage staff of discrimination against unmarried women.

Then I obtained a letter to the Heritage board from anonymous staffers that alleged the same thing — and more.

Heritage is aware that alleged behavior could create legal trouble.

At a meeting yesterday, staff voiced deep concern about anti-Jewish sentiment at Heritage and on the right.

That was followed by a Heritage staffer complaining about attending a Shabbat dinner.

🚨 WaPo SCOOP: Inside the crisis at the Heritage Foundation

The group behind Project 2025 is facing a rebellion — and has been for months.

The Tucker Carlson/Nick Fuentes/antisemitism saga is just what caused it to break into the open.

At least five members of Heritage’s antisemitism task force resigned after Roberts defended Carlson’s interview with antisemitic white nationalist Nick Fuentes.
