I’m seeing the vision, this is sick

Spreadsheets are like the best way to design a game??? They’re entirely data driven, easy to collaborate on, easy to version control, and easy to parse.

Sorry to that guy but spreadsheets are sick

Big machine that’s secretly alive gotta be one of the best tropes fr

Definitely think there’s a lot to learn from psychology scholarship, it’d be cool to see a crossover that wasn’t about making more addictive slot machines lol

Really interesting to hear it described from the psychological angle. I see what you mean about horror games! Feels like its the genre that is most interested in exploring this kind of design.

Just finished Moutwashing! I'm amazed at how much horror it evokes with a little bit of mystery in the gameplay (spoliery #gamedev thread)

Thanks for sharing! I’m fairly new to shaders and haven’t seen that technique of offsetting the vertex before, have to give it a go!

Woah cool!! Never considered font shaders, how do they work? Is it like signed distance fields from the curves or something?

I always put off dev tools and then they inevitably pay themselves off like 10x within a week, really underrated part of the craft.

This looks great!!

If a living economy is something you’re interested in I’d recommend the paper Emergent Economies for Role Playing Games by Doran and Parberry.

The system creates pretty lively motivations and behaviours for characters in the world and has a good surface area for the player to interact with too.

So cool how the structures kind of warp and build around each other. I can’t believe how many amazing rulesets you’re finding, Conway would be proud

it feels like a cruel trick that clean architecture and interesting games are in kind of opposite directions
November 15, 2025 at 3:46 PM
Oooo I see what you mean, this looks nasty to solve for lol. Such a cool problem!
November 13, 2025 at 1:15 PM
I’m sure its a nightmare of math underneath but it looks really elegant from the outside!

Does each bezel have one shell that fits or is the idea to parametrise them, e.g. how flat/curved they are?
November 13, 2025 at 12:21 PM
Has been really cool to see your approach to creating tools! Is a lot of the half-edge work looking for situations like this to create abstractions for?

the termitemancer

Good luck!! Hopefully that makes it easy to experiment with other rulesets too
November 10, 2025 at 11:49 PM
So sick! Have you tried exploring a few? How do they feel?
November 10, 2025 at 6:12 PM
Before you can attain any kind of "mastery" the scene is over, the mechanic is gone, and it doesn't appear for the rest of the game. Mouthwashing pulls this trick a few times. It's scary every time because the mechanics are always new. SO COOL!

You have no time to figure out the nuances of the system, and you're not sure how your actions map to the consequences you're going to receive. This confusion, along with the setting, makes it a horrifying experience to PLAY.

Then SUDDENLY it'll drop you into a mini game with very little explanation of the rules - you wake up in an infinite cargo hold and an invisible monster gets you if you make too much noise.
