This is what pushed me from Catholicism. I belonged to a faction focused on Christ’s immanence and the belief that, if the Christian claim is true, we should be able to see evidence in our lives. And I didn’t!

i thought Wiles came across as *remarkably* understudied and incurious in the Vanity Fair interviews. Her perspective feels very passive even when talking about events that she had the power to shape.

Yes! That was my understanding as well. We've definitely never been through anything like eastern europe/the USSR.
