This is a great book if you are new to Syria, and also for people who think they know a lot already. It's very easy to read and full of information I haven't seen anywhere else.

Help me out BlueSky folks. Is is okay to justify the killing of journalists (and their families as collateral damage)? This weekend at least three journalists were killed along with their spouses and children. Avi knows this. I brought it to his attention. Yet he doubles down on this line:

I can't understand how someone who's essentially clear-eyed, and understands what's happening in the Middle East can say normal things, correct things, and then suddenly a long-term obsession with Obama derails everything else.

Yes, I agree. I've seen a list of 717 names confirmed dead so far, and a Syrian Alawi contact I have knows some of them personally and also can confirm an unarmed uncle who was witnessed shot in the head after he was asked if he was Alawi.
This troll shows that there are people who think like that.

They may face reprisals from the new regime.

One of my colleagues seems to have been radicalized in recent months. Now she's rhetorically asking why people didn't bomb the Nasrallah funeral yesterday. I feel like a lot of my friends and colleagues are losing it. Is it the weather? Is it something deeper? Where are we going with all this?

This guy is crying and calling for genocide. Many, many calls for genocide coming out on the other place today. Unfortunately, giving a huge national platform to victims of kidnapping is adding an emotional layer to new calls for ethnic cleansing and a return to war.

We must find a way to both remember the specific victims of the Holocaust AND internalize the processes that led to it.
The fact that you have otherwise intelligent and presumably empathetic people who would wish to see Gaza depopulated through whatever means shows that we have failed to get this.
