The only other thing I can think of would maybe be The Magical Adventures of Shazam where The Wizard is clearly designed after Mamagaran but I’m fairly certain he’s just been The Wizard in that. Maybe some other obscure crossover I missed

It’s a shame the same can’t be said for Ghostbusters. I’m not a die-hard fan of the franchise but I am always happy to see Dan Ackroyd get paid to work on one of his hyperfixations.

To be honest, it is. The only thing is has in common is “yearly special publication”, but it at least has people associating the word annual with a magazine based treat, a special issue.

It’s a slightly different thing, but I wonder if it’s easier to understand for Brits, for whom getting an Annual for Christmas every year is a common tradition. Our annuals are normally hardbacks with comics, puzzles and features, but the idea of a special yearly publication is more ingrained here.
