This is how the far right retains power: we're presented with a far-right, explicitly fascist option (Poilievre, Trump, Le Pen, whoever the most recent of the hapless UK Tory leaders was) and a supposed liberal (Carney, Biden/Harris, Macron, Starmer) who's also far-right but not explicitly fascist.

Redshirts is my favorite of Scalzi's (other than the mighty End of All Things). I'm usually less fond of his stuff when he's being playful, but—as you say—he walks the line impeccably this time.

if your ideology is based on the idea that it is justifiable to prey on the weak there isn't going to be a meaningful boundary you can draw between looting from the poor and sexually exploiting kids. i don't think every conservative is a pervert but that is the logical conclusion of their beliefs
