Love to see that @jamellebouie.net engaged with my @hammerandhope.bsky.social essay on class, identity, black politics, labor and @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social in depth today at the @nytimes.com. I’m a bit blown away. Shared below as a thread:
Thoughts on governance and compromise

This by @runestahl.bsky.social is great. Left populism's embrace of some culturally conservative positions like anti-immigration has been an utter failure. It's not just morally a dead end, its an electoral one as well -- see also Sahra Wagenknecht in Germany.

In Denmark, Social Democracy Is Failing
Around Europe, old labor parties have alienated their base by forming grand coalitions with center-right forces. In Denmark, Mette Frederiksen’s Social Democrats have pursued this same strategy with t...

I wrote up some thoughts on the place of class, identity, and left organization in NYC's election for the @hammerandhope.bsky.social newsletter:

Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City mayoral race overturns the destructive bipartisan consensus that identity politics are simply a dead end.

OK, this is a funny typo in something I am writing: "fast and free city bud service"

A good reason why it is a bad idea to treat educational attainment as a proxy for economic class, even if it does generate important cultural distinctions and divisions.

Even better, what if we have 100 year mortgages where our future progeny pay back the bank in labor hours.

Same Saturday night Max Weber. We definitely live in an age of high political vanity. As Weber suggests, what comes of it is violence.

There is no such thing as a coherent working-class ideology or culture that can said to be of that class, it's doesn't exist and never has.

Authors find increase in cultural protest (left: war, enviro, + right: anti-immigrant, anti-EU, and both: Covid pro and anti-containment measures) across Europe and diminishing economic protests, which are typically led by unions. Where is European labor these days?

The Mamdani campaign, via its ties to DSA and working-class groups like taxi drivers, service workers, immigrants, knocked the last nail into the coffin of the economistic approach to politics. Now that the so-called anti-woke are more undead than alive, maybe we can finally understand the phenom.

It's amazing that the reactionary Silicon Valley right think that authoritarian forms of rule will be more efficient.

"With less than 24 hours to go...the Trump administration has not publicly shared a list.. or told many of the airports bracing for cuts how flights may be canceled."
