From the bits and pieces I’ve read, activitypub has user identity more tightly coupled to a server. that’s one of the problems ATproto tries to address. It’s not at it’s end state but I’m rooting for ATproto to succeed at this

Being unable to authenticate to other PDSes is more of an architectural limitation, not intent. Other PDS still relies on some centralized infrastructure (like authentication) for now. Ongoing challenge that I think will be resolved in time

They are a weird phenomenon, since moving out of queens, I’ve seen too many and they still make me uncomfortable. The closer you get to the mason dixie — the more they are lol
