This book absolutely wrecked me -- aside from the story being told, there's something about the prose that's not just sharp and not just beautiful but somehow surgical, glinting like flames off a scalpel. I kept looking down like "Am I bleeding? Did it cut me?" Yes and yes.
Notes from a Regicide is OUT TODAY! It is about an sad-sack artist who accidently sparks a revolution, or -- viewed from the other end of the telescope -- it's about how we never really know our families. It's about painting, and tarot, and journalism, and blood.

A thread on birthright citizenship I wrote in 2018, that unfortunately remains relevant.

I always thought this was where it was all headed. Abolishing birthright citizenship for the non-white and non-rich. And why I teach on United States v. Wong Kim Ark every semester.

Who was Wong Kim Ark? 1/

Your periodic reminder that if you plan to hire an indexer and/or proofreader for your academic book, you should be looking for them as soon as you get your production schedule (shortly after turning in your final MS). If your publisher doesn’t tell you when to expect typeset proofs, ask!
So true! I hate having to turn down authors, especially because the books are often so very interesting. If you get on my schedule early, I will do everything I can and more to keep you on it if the timing slips. But once I’m booked, I can’t squeeze in a new project.

I regularly have to turn work away and help find an indexer for academics who leave it until they have the pdf ready for indexing. It is much better to line up someone with relevant experience and interests ahead of schedule and negotiate if there's slippage.

And every book in the EEA series is free to read online!
I'm learning so much by reading titles in the @cornellupress.bsky.social Environments of East Asia series (which is open-access!). It was a pleasure to interview FORCES OF NATURE editors @dfeds.bsky.social, Eleana Kim, and Albert Park for the #AsiaNow blog at @aasasianstudies.bsky.social.
New #AsiaNow post: an interview with David Fedman, Eleana Kim, and Albert Park, editors of the @cornellupress.bsky.social open-access volume FORCES OF NATURE: NEW PERSPECTIVES ON KOREAN ENVIRONMENTS.

I was lucky enough to read an early draft of this, and I'm still not over it. One of my favorite horror stories.
New Story today. The V*mpire in Reactor (formerly tordotcom).

A trans teenage girl is stalked by a vampire over tumblr in 2013. Please mind the warnings.
