It’s a quarterly figure not monthly but the previous quarter this year was 0.7%. In 2017, the previous quarter had seen growth of 0.2%. So leaving all politics aside, one was up (marginally -2017) and one is down.

The BBC can defend itself but it is always important to be careful when drawing comparisons… in this case the 0.3% 2017 Q2 growth was an improvement on the Q1 figure for that year. This year’s figure is down on Q1. So you’re simply not comparing like with like.

You might be right, Rónán, but if you’re going to quote “desperately needed” in a headline, it would want to be in the copy, or even the planning decision it was based on…. But then you know that.
