The shared love of words led to a friendship between two men from very different backgrounds who appeared uncannily similar with their long white beards. Simon Winchester's book The Professor and the Madman is quite an interesting read, ideal for dark winter nights.

Did you know that Dr. William Minor contributed thousands of quotations to the Oxford English Dictionary... from his study in Broadmoor asylum?

Read In the Debris Field by Luke Whisnant in a sundrenched field. It's amazing how he shifts between major life events in a few sentences.

"It is a character's silences, uncertainties and sorrows that bring me close to him, not his victories or acts of courage... I pay most attention to the shadowy patches and moments of fragility in my books, as miniaturists do in their paintings..."

Just finished reading Take Two by Caroline & Vivian Thonger, telling the story of their family through flash, micro fiction, poetry and their grandparents' letters. While forms vary, the narrative is not random--each story gives a small powerful glimpse into three generations, often packing a punch!

Hope your Halloween was spooky and wild! How did you celebrate? I carved a jack-o'-lantern and made a papier mache hat for the night.

Green mood this evening, trying a new cake with matcha frosting. In my writing group we wrote about thresholds and enjoyed discussing mythology.

‎"It is the story of a very stubborn woman and I didn't see it when I created her... that really makes her powerful. If I wrote Blackbird now it would be a totally different thing. I understand her better and better and I would love to be as stubborn as she is." Tamta Melashvili

Diving deeper into this collection, feeling the tug of strong emotions. How the cinema pulls Lata from a blustery day to places saturated with memory in Dusk Over Atlantic Wharf and the narrator's observations in the title story as spices bring a cold street to life.

"In public discourse I try to put new words that haven't been said around me and different words... In a matter of minutes the debate is completely polarized... So my idea idea as a writer is to observe this and see if there is space to widen the dynamic." Paolo Giordano, Pen Against Silence panel
