i was looking at maps for the mega drive sonic games today, and realised some of the foreground geometry has some very odd, abstract detailing. like what would these look like in 3D? if i were better at modelling i'd try it myself

the default styling for subtitles/captioning on youtube videos now seems to include this awful paritally-transparent font and background. does it need saying that this is TERRIBLE for legibility? they must be changed back to white on black immediately

thoughts on #SonicMovie3 (spoilers)
- I'm OK with most of the plot differences between the movie and the game. Some make more sense with the movie canon (Shadow is an alien, not artificial), and some are more entertaining (Gerald is alive). I'm glad plot lines like Sonic being mistaken for Shadow were cut, it doesn't even make much sense in the original game - The Wachowski's are a bit of a drag now that there's enough Sonic characters present to interact with each other. At least they were only supporting characters - Shadow's Akira bike slide up the side of the building into the air?? My God that's cool as fuck - The funny juxtaposition of meeting the GUN General in a kid's restaurant could have been played up a bit more, but the joke is still there - Though never mind the Chao Garden - Chao in Space 3! - Sonic very quickly goes from being an ally to GUN to not trusting them at all once he's told about Shadow. Wonder if that will come up again later? - Shadow's memories with Maria clearly take place in the 70's - 50 years ago. This is something the original game doesn't do well - the ARK always looks the same, and in what past decade are humanity building massive space stations anyway?? - Ivo meeting Gerald is a great scene. It starts out with very obvious split-screens, but transitions to a single-shot moving camera scene with actor self-interaction - very impressive! Though a couple of the patches were noticeable - The raid of GUN's headquarters is fine, but still probably the worst part of the movie. The planning montage has some fun moments (I liked Sonic's reactions after watching himself get incinerated), but the actual event is a bit boring. Guess it's needed to go to the third act though - I'm glad the Eclipse Cannon still has the same name, and its design being a sort of Death Egg/ARK crossover is a nice touch. It makes more sense that it's launched during the events of the film - The Sonic vs Shadow fight scene(s) are so SO good. The moment that Super Shadow effortlessly blocks the first punch from Super Sonic got me so excited - I KNEW that it was going to be good after that - Despite all the Dragonball references, I was surprised they didn't include a shot of Sonic being Yamcha'd after losing the Chaos Emeralds - Having the Ivo vs Gerald fight separately but simultaneously to Sonic and Shadow was a good idea, they can do all the comic relief while Sonic and Shadow do the actual fighting - no Marvel quips necessary - The sound effects on Gerald's death were top-notch, exactly the right mood - I was waiting for the moment that Shadow had to pop the rings off to unleash his full power, I knew it HAD to happen - I found it funny that despite the Eclipse Cannon was aimed at Earth, it still manages to hit the moon like in the original game. Something something pissing on the moon - Amy and Metal Sonic are good choices for characters to introduce, though I wonder if that will be a "Sonic returns home" kind of story. It'd make sense to end it afterwards, there aren't many well-known Sonic characters left - Shadow survives, of course - definitely want to avoid the canonical mess with Shadow's inclusion in Heroes, his own game, 06, etc. immediately afterwards - I don't think Eggman will have survived. I imagine it's a good out for Jim Carey, and also gives Agent Stone room to take over being the comical villain

For Halloween I decided to do a simple Akumajou Densetsu-style arrangement of Calling From Heaven, from stage 6 of Castlevania Bloodlines! I also created a mockup of what that stage might look like in Castlevania III.
