Great material for a discussion. As a (mostly) experimentalist who does some simulations, the epistemic superior discoveries come when one approach informs the other. Historically, however, careful observation - atomic theory, Darwin's evolution, Kepler's laws of planetary motion - ruled supreme.

The proboscis is anterior to the collar & in this critter, it’s a transparent sphere. Posterior to the collar is the transparent trunk - notice the sediment in the intestine. The anterior trunk has paired ‘wings’ where the gonads develop. This one’s not gravid.

The ‘lips’ are lateral extensions of the collar, used to transport food particles to the mouth.
