I think phoenix has more leeway, the nature of it is transformative and connects to a well-known phrase. I'd say you're safe with that over many other creatures.

Dragons are a big pull for readers. If it was only symbolic, you'd need to make it very clear in the book blurb or be prepared for some harsh disappointment.

Ray Bradbury comes to mind, but I could be wrong and just not searched the depths of the internet.

That was the most I laughed at something so gory. Stevens could read the phone book onscreen and I'd be riveted.

Didn't even think about that factor with audiobooks, but it completely makes sense! It's also great for fantasy stories with unique names... I'll hear it and think oh THAT'S how you pronounce that word 😆.

Excited for you! I've been getting into audiobooks more when my commute to work changed. It is fascinating to hear how the actor's performance adds to the words, especially for books I'd previously read.

2/2
Slowly hope is unburied
Fear fades and tears dry
Our twin towers did not die for you
They lived for us
Every life that fell with them
Still lives with us
Every hero who scrabbled up those stairs
Still lives with us
Hate cannot win because it never truly fights
Only love triumphs
imperfect, free

Kudos for not slapping the nitwit or leveling him with the following:
This conversation counts as trauma.
Listening to you was a test of survival.
Enduring your insufferable misogyny was a good start.

Never thought to include a note when you've invented a locale, but not a bad idea. People do get precious about their areas, more so if they believe it's been misrepresented. The point that it's fictional is lost on them.
