Last month, voters repudiated MAGA in elections large and small across the country. Those of us on the left need a clear-eyed assessment of the political terrain and a vision that can look beyond the current fight.

On Zohran Mamdani's win, @bradlander.bsky.social wrote:

"When Donald Trump sends troops here, it won’t be 'Donald Trump versus Zohran Mamdani.' It will be 'Donald Trump versus New York City.' And we’ve got to rise to the challenge together — as New Yorkers."

"The reality is that this election was a rejection of Trump’s economy and a rejection of ICE and its cruelty—not an endorsement of any of its particular replacements."

“When I realized I wasn’t going to be allowed to leave, I slid onto the floor, thinking they would have to call an ambulance to help me up. They didn’t.”

As the USA faces the largest healthcare cuts in its history, Texas presents a frightening vision.

Still, both live with the fear they could be moved again.

Advocates say we need a complete overhaul:

▪️ Funding for community-based care
▪️ Strong, enforceable standards for any facility providing personal care
▪️ Investment in Adult Protective Services
▪️ Policies rooted in disability justice, not “out of sight, out of mind.”
December 8, 2025 at 6:40 PM
And this isn’t just about Texas.

As Congress slashes $500 billion from Medicare and $1 trillion from Medicaid over the next 9 years, experts expect up to 16 million people to lose coverage and hundreds of nursing homes to close.
December 8, 2025 at 6:40 PM
Others describe inaccessible bathrooms, hours-long waits to be moved from bed, filthy mattresses, stolen belongings and caregivers who humiliate or even assault residents.

For many undocumented, disabled and older people with no family, these homes are the only option.
December 8, 2025 at 6:40 PM
The result: people like Manuel, an undocumented immigrant with quadriplegia, shuttled through eight facilities.

At one point, he says he was left in the dark for days, with little food or water and no help to change his clothes.
December 8, 2025 at 6:40 PM
In Texas, boarding homes are low-cost houses—often charging around $1,400/month—where people with serious medical needs end up because they can’t afford $5–7k/month nursing homes or don’t qualify for Medicaid.

His death was ruled a homicide and Becquer is now charged with murder.
December 8, 2025 at 6:40 PM
By early 2024, Arlington police were investigating at least 13 deaths in Becquer’s homes over 18 months.

One resident, Steven “Kelly” Pankratz, died with psychotropic meds in his system he’d never been prescribed.

Angelique says that when she tried to get out by sliding to the floor, the staff dragged her onto a mattress.

Desperate, she tried to harm herself so someone would call 911. No one did.

Only when she messaged a friend, 'I'm being held against my will,' did the police come.
December 8, 2025 at 6:40 PM
When 53-year-old Angelique Estes arrived at a small house in Arlington in December 2023, she hoped it would be safer than the streets & cheaper than a nursing home.

Instead, she was neglected, given mayonnaise sandwiches, sedated with an unknown drug, and not allowed to leave.
