Today marks 120 years since the birth of Japanese actress Teruko Kishi (岸輝子)-- May 1st, 1905 - May 10th, 1990. Co-founder of the incredibly influential Haiyuza Theater Company in 1944 and, in 1962, the New Japan Women's Association.

The legendary Japanese film producer Tomoyuki Tanaka (田中友幸) was born 115 years ago, on April 26th, 1910. A titan of Toho Studios, he produced over 200 films, famously launching Godzilla in 1954. He also produced iconic films for Akira Kurosawa. Tanaka passed away on April 2nd, 1997.

The Japanese Kabuki actor Bandō Tamasaburō V (五代目坂東玉三郎) turns 75 years old today, born on April 25th, 1950. Widely celebrated as the leading onnagata of his generation, he was designated a Living National Treasure in 2012.

Lol looks like you're right. Multiple places have this picture attributed as Shinji Wada (just 1: www.goodreads.com/author/show/...). I do my due diligence but didn't catch this one. Thanks for the heads up. The only other picture I found was this.

The Japananse Mangaka Shinji Wada (和田慎二) was born 75 years ago today, on April 19th, 1950. Best known for revolutionizing shojo manga with his influential series Sukeban Deka. He passed away on July 5th, 2011. #BOTD

Happy 85th birthday to the Japanese actress Mikiko Tsubouchi (坪内ミキ子), born on April 12th, 1940! She is primarily known for her roles in jidaigeki films and TV series, especially her multiple appearances in the Zatoichi films. #botd

Toshirō Ide (井手俊郎) was born 115 years ago, on April 11th, 1910. He debuted as a screenwriter in 1949 with "The Blue Mountains" Part 1 and 2, released just a week apart. Ide became a prolific and celebrated writer. #BOTD

The Japanese actress Yōko Katsuragi (桂木洋子) was born 95 years ago on April 6th, 1930. She debuted in 1948 under director Keisuke Kinoshita and quickly became a staple at Shochiku Studios. She quietly retired in 1963 to focus on family life and passed away in March 2007. #botd

Toshirō Mifune (三船敏郎) needs no introduction. Born on this day 105 years, on April 1st, 1920. Go watch "The Quiet Duel," an overlooked collaboration between Akira Kurosawa and Mifune. Mifune made Kurosawa cry while filming a scene in this film.

The Japanese animator and director Yoshifumi Kondō (近藤 喜文) was born 75 years ago, on March 31st, 1950. A key figure in some of Studio Ghibli's best works, he also directed the widely beloved "Whisper of the Heart." His untimely passing on January 21st, 1998, was a huge loss to the world of anime.

The Japanese actor Kōen Okumura (奥村公延) was born 95 years ago, on March 31st, 1930. Starting his career in 1955, he became a versatile actor in stage, film, and television. He had a crucial role in Jūzō Itami's "The Funeral" as the corpse, earning him the title of "Japan's best corpse actor." #BOTD

The Japanese actress Moeko Ezawa (絵沢萠子) was born 90 years ago, on March 28th, 1935. She debuted on stage in 1963 and entered film with Kaneto Shindō’s "Strong Women, Weak Men" in 1968. She gained recognition in Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno line with "Wet Lips" (1972). #BOTD

The Japanese actor and comedian Saburō Bōya (坊屋三郎) was born 115 years ago, on March 28th, 1910. He began his entertainment career in 1936 at Tokyo's Asakusa Comedy Theater and co-founded the musical comedy trio Akireta Boys in 1937. He passed away on May 25th, 2002.​

The Japanese actress Nobuko Miyamoto (宮本信子) turns 80 years old today, born on March 27th, 1945. A Bungakuza-trained stage actress, she rose to fame in the 1980s as the star of her husband Jūzō Itami’s acclaimed satires: "Tampopo", "A Taxing Woman", "The Funeral", and more.

The Japanese actress Reiko Dan (団令子) was born 90 years ago, on March 26th, 1935. After winning “Miss Kimono” in the 1956 Miss Japan contest, she joined Toho Studios in 1957 and quickly became one of the studio’s most popular actresses. #BOTD

The Japanese horror director and screenwriter Yoshihiro Ishikawa (石川義寛) was born 100 years ago, on March 23rd, 1925! He largely followed in the footsteps of his mentor Nobuo Nakagawa, making stylized folk horror. #BOTD

Next, you should check out the "It Is Wonderful to Create" series. Featuring interviews with Kurosawa's collaborators, each episode covers a different film, covering 21 of his films in all. Most can be found as special features on the various Kurosawa films released by Criterion or BFI.

You should also check out the late great scholar Stephen Prince's commentaries on Akira Kurosawa's films--bursting with details, insight, and passion. As well as his book "The Warrior's Camera: The Cinema of Akira Kurosawa."

May I also suggest the "Sanshiro's Boys" podcast. In 2020-21, two friends got together and discussed each of Akira Kurosawa's films in order of release; it's lighthearted yet discerning. timothyamatulli.com/sanshirosboy...

If you want to see the master at work on a daunting production, I'd recommend watching "Making of 'Dreams'." The documentary made by the eccentric director Nobuhiko Obayashi, documenting the making of Akira Kurosawa's "Dreams" (1990).
