If anyone knows an Andreas V from Twitter who also used to post on FYAD please ask them if they still want a story about a frog. They requested it through my Ko-fi five years ago and I've never forgotten. Out of many mistakes I made this is one I can still resolve.

Aw fuck off, Oxford University Press is going ahead and publishing a multivolume scholarly set of the complete works of Thomas Browne but they're giving it the same absurd pricing they did Robert Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy. global.oup.com/academic/con...

I've been copying phrases from Thomas Browne's Pseudodoxia Epidemica into a commonplace book as I'm reading it and now I'll post some of them here for you.

Grilled cheese with pickles, grilled cheese with onions, grilled cheese with sauerkraut, grilled cheese with fried egg, grilled cheese with fresh basil.

Aside from mustard and hot sauce I also like to make a sardine sandwich with onion powder, fennel seeds, celery salt, and thyme and I've been known to have a peanut butter pickle sandwich as well. You can put goddamn anything on a sandwich.

I don't like that Aris and his followers have infiltrated the online sumo space. Now it's no longer Gamer-free.

Is there a browser extension that blocks recommendations from personal channels of stage magicians asking if they'll fool Penn & Teller?

One excellent essay in Revolution in 35mm stands out, about campus/youth protest movies of the 60s and their decline in the early 70s, including a good deal on the production troubles of Zabriskie Point caused by studio and government opposition.

Saw photos of a local protest here in solidarity with Minneapolis and one of the signs reminded me that ICE abducted the owner of our nearby Chinese restaurant en route to a green card appointment in June and as far as anyone knows he's still being detained somewhere in state.

Quicker to just say it's depressing to read history.
January 19, 2026 at 3:48 AM
Very depressing to read the essays in Revolution in 35mm and see again and again that while the left may win victories and progress here and there it always eventually fractures or becomes complacent or is crushed and it's capitalism, and by extension fascism, that wins the long game.

Despite joking about it before I hadn't actually heard Julie Kavner's voice for Marge in the past few years, and I definitely didn't know Harry Shearer had also become a pale specter whispering from the shadows. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTSW...

Dry beans are still a cheap staple food if you buy them from Aldi.
January 18, 2026 at 4:14 AM
Cabbage is on the cusp of no longer being a cheap food, despite being in season.
January 18, 2026 at 4:13 AM
I have lived this winter on cabbage, squash, and dry beans.

Roasted spaghetti squash and topped it with garlic, tomato paste, and crumbled tofu sauteed in olive oil and leftover brine from a jar of stuffed olives. Garnished with fresh basil and the last of a package of walnuts which I dry toasted in a skillet.
