We need innovation but not in the usual way - excesses - we’ve come to think of it over the last two decade. Good read. MIT press open access. Matthew Wisnioski. Every American an Innovator. 2025. We must start asking innovation for whom, by whom, to what ends. Innovate our hearts and minds! 😊

Grooming hydrangeas while I continue to think about Freedom of information Act (FOIA) libraries is blending biophilia and infophilia, love of plants / nature, knowledge & info literacy. Spring makes its way in. I’m ready to continue writing Part 3 FOIA series infophilia.substack.com/p/foia-libra...

Friday Fright! Here’s what the forced tulips looked like mere days after they first bloomed. It made me remember why I’ve never bought forced tulips—or any other forced bulbs—before! They’ve been forced to put so much energy for their gorgeous beauty blooms that they will likely never bloom again!

Reading a novel for the local library reading club feels a bit unusual. I’m exploring it tentatively as another way to support public libraries. We’re reading The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters. I wonder if the selection is not so much prescience as it is a librarian who truly knows their audience.

Planning to post here on lies and truth as I read a new book set aside last year: May contain lies: how stories, statistics, and studies exploit our biases —and what we can do about it. Alex Edmans. University of California Press. 2024. “…knowledge is only half the battle.” p. 10. 1/

“Across the land, a willing suspension of disbelief has taken hold. (Critical thinking is so 2017).” David Remnick, The Talk of the Town, New Yorker. But, here’s my response: I’m practicing bibliotherapy. A willing captive in the land of beautiful books and the dreams they inspire. New book group 📚😴

Quote: As soon as the thought came to him, he know the thought itself was privileged. … always Christmas brought out the best, and the worst in people.

From: Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan (2021). I wish I’d read it in print book in hand, instead of listening to the audiobook on a phone!

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate. It’s a beautiful world.

Christmas Eve service. It’s going to be historic. This year, Hanukkah starts at sundown on December 25, coinciding with Christmas Day. A rare calendar alignment that has occurred only four times since 1900.

Libraries are incubators of healthy infophilia. Librarians are not only the curators of information and knowledge cultures, but they also nurture curiosity culture.

Outside my work, the thing I care most about is gardening — Eric Blair (George Orwell)
Orwell’s rose garden still thrives today! I had a lovely Sunday as I took time to smell the roses and harvest guavas from our small garden. Small moments of biophilia beauty that I’m taking into the new week. 🌱

Resilience shapes who we are and where we’re headed. 🌱 In this week’s un paywalled edition of Infophilia I reflect on what I learned at Fort Sumter. Don’t miss my 1 min video of the Park Ranger’s ‘3’ things. What does resilience mean to you in these divided times? #PositiveInfoCultures
