Older people have told us how fear of discrimination and unfair evictions has meant they feel forced to stay in unsuitable properties.

We hope the #RentersRightsAct addresses this but we still need action to ensure everyone has access to a safe, decent home.
Text reads: Types of contract. All fixed-term contracts will become periodic. With ‘periodic’ or rolling contracts, a tenant will be able to end their tenancy at any point by giving two months’ notice. This will offer renters flexibility, so that they’re not tied to a property that potentially doesn’t meet their needs. Text reads: Upfront costs. Landlords will only be able to request up to one month’s rent in advance. This change means that tenants will be protected from requests for large amounts of money upfront to secure a property. Text reads: Rental bidding. Landlords won’t be able to accept offers that are higher than the advertised price. The Act will make it illegal for landlords or agents to ask for, encourage or accept bids above the asking rent of a property. This will make it fairer for all potential tenants viewing a property. Text reads: Pets. Landlords won’t be able to ban pets. A landlord cannot ‘unreasonably’ refuse to allow a pet under the Act. Tenants are also able to challenge decisions they think are unfair.

The announced measures do not go far enough to ease the burden of escalating bills and to prevent older renters from making dangerous sacrifices to manage their rent.

We need the UK Government to commit to ending poverty in later life.
