your old handle doesn’t redirect to your new one. When I changed my handle to my domain, my old bsky social handle became immediately available again so I set up a second account with my old handle (and just wrote in the bio that I don’t use it and gave my new handle)

If you change your handle all your posts and followers move over automatically to your new handle BUT …
