Yup. This.The framing of deficits as requiring austerity, instead of using taxation to reduce inequality, fueled resentment in liberal democracies. This empowered nationalist and populist forces, supported by foreign actors and domestic oligarchs, driving de globalization and political instability.

These "populists" aren't new but they are now backed by oligarchs that own corrupt politicians in power and also control the media. They continue to push the "privitazation makes it better" and the trickle-down lie to avoid accountability for the decaying cities and toxic cultures they’ve created.
