Last summer, we excavated seven deserted sites in Rangárvallasýsla. Some great archaeology there! Initial results indicate that most of the sites were abandoned before 1500, while some were established later and remained in use for only a few generations. Next stop: West and East Iceland!

Our fieldwork in Rangárvallasýsla (South Iceland) is now finished! Seven deserted farms were trenched and cored. Preliminary results suggest that c half of the sites were abandoned before 1500 whilst others were settled later. And some remained in use until the 17th century.

First week of fieldwork underway. Great archaeology near the volcano Hekla. Interesting stories about how eruptions have shaped the landscape and the settlement in the area. We will share more news soon!
