there are places where i have seen it used that do actually make sense or are helpful (like when encountering the word 'naïf' for the first time) but 'reënters' is definitely a new yorker special

i have this same problem, and i think for me it is at least partly because my episodic memory is not very good. hunger and willingness to eat are tied to memory to a pretty surprising degree.

if some of your 'filler art' actually distracts from your presentation because people are wondering why you're using slop or why that person has six fingers, it is definitionally not neutral filler, but a net negative. so why bother using it?
