Right after fixing the drive to the skull, we drove the tetrodes down about 1 mm into the brain during the surgery. I've never had a problem!

Not sure if this is helpful but here is my experience: I used to use tetrodes in rats; We removed the dura, ensured that bleeding stopped, placed the tetrode bundle on the surface of the brain, and applied Kwik-Sil around the bundle (but not around the tetrodes) to seal the area.
