The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has opened a new investigation into the origin of African swine fever (ASF) in Spain, after receiving today the report from the EU reference laboratory communicating the results of sequencing the genome of the ASF virus. Viruses, under natural conditions, undergo changes in their genome to varying degrees when they spread through infection cycles in animals. Therefore, the discovery of a virus similar to the one that circulated in Georgia does not rule out the possibility that its origin lies in a biological containment facility. The “Georgia 2007” virus strain is a “reference” virus that is frequently used in experimental infections in confinement facilities to conduct virus studies or to evaluate the effectiveness of vaccines, which are currently under development. The "ministry" in Spain is saying that the swine fever outbreak virus is very similar to a 2007 strain.
Genome sequencing by a Madrid lab showed the strain was “very similar” to one first detected in Georgia in 2007 and now widely used in research and vaccine development, the ministry said. Other cases in Europe belong to a different genetic group. "The discovery of a virus similar to the one that circulated in Georgia therefore does not rule out the possibility that its origin may lie in a biological containment facility," the Agriculture Ministry said. The methods are unchanged from the preprint version and they still haven’t figured out why they couldn’t find a study before 2020 when they searched “AND (Covid)”
METHODS Study Identification and Data Abstraction We sought to assess MMWR face mask studies by searching PubMed using 2 search strategies: 1) ("MMWR. Morbidity and mortality weekly report"[Journal]) AND ("face covering") AND (covid); 2) ("MMWR. Morbidity and mortality weekly report"[Journal]) AND (mask) AND (covid). Our search did not identify any mask articles published prior to 2020, although our search was not restricted by date. Ninety percent of mask studies published in the MMWR had one or more authors with CDC affiliations. There was a median of 13 authors per paper and, although there were some authors who co-authored multiple papers, there was a total of 1544 paper authors, which speaks to the large amount of effort that went into studying and publishing about this topic in the journal. It is, thus, disappointing that, due to the intrinsic limitation of the study designs, the sum of the work was inconclusive, yet strong conclusions were drawn and communicated to the public nonetheless. One paper they would have found if they had chosen not to include covid as a search term. From 1998, a study evaluating the effectiveness of n95s. Results indicate that fit testing is needed to hit expected performance levels.

Not only did they exclude pre-COVID mask studies, they included studies that only contained the word mask, but were not actually about masking.
Row 7 refers to this study, which is about the use of At-home covid-19 tests. Is this a study in the MMWR that pertains to masks? That's what the authors say and they include this paper in their analysis. If you look you can see why it appears on their search result. It includes statements in the abstract/conclusions that wearing a well-fitted mask when recommended after a positive test or known exposure can help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Their keyword search strategy uses "mask"/face cover" AND (covid). The AND means the result must include both keywords. If you wanted to look at mask studies from the 1980's, it would be a very bad idea to force your results to include covid. We are off to a fantastic start.

Knowing nothing about if the mutations are derived or ancestral, the only date I would have cared about is when they cracked open those samples in the lab for sequencing.
Despite the significant worldwide efforts we still do not know the origin of COVID-19. For this reason, detailed analysis of any sample containing early genetic material from SARS-CoV-2 is of paramount importance. Csabai et. al1 have recently found samples under project ID PRJNA6923192 with 12 samples, all were collected from soil at King George Island, Antarctica in a 3 week period after 2018-12-24. Three of the samples, SRR13441704, SRR13441705 and SRR13441708 contain enough sequence reads to cover the SARS-CoV-2 genome at average depth of 17x which allows to call mutations. The DNA from soil was extracted in December 2019 and sent to Sangon Biotech, Shanghai, China3, but the more exact time of the sequencing is not known. According to the phylogenetic analysis the samples seems to be very early, maybe one of the earliest - to our knowledge not published - variants most closely related to Pango lineage "A". They also contain some unique rare mutations and a long deletion starting at nucleotide 21761. After posting our preprint1 the public access to the sequencing data was revoked4 at SRA, but a month later the public access was restored5 https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-1330800/v1
