I always think of 'lady' as exclusively for small children and their parents, as in 'mind that lady', 'look at the funny lady', 'are you a man or a lady?' etc.

Oh gosh, if I didn't know how to drive I would have been terrified starting the engine! (I can drive but I'm still nervous about it because cars are so much bigger than motorbikes.)
