UW held the Horns to just one score, late in the second, shutting down an offense led in part by Johnny "Lam" Jones, a 1976 Olympic gold medalist (4x100m) sprinter. UW defensive stars Doug Martin, Stafford Mays and Greg Grimes led a stingy defense that produced 4 turnovers.

The No. 11 Longhorns had spent nearly the entire season in the top 10, reaching as high as No. 2 before a 17-14 loss at No. 10 Arkansas. A loss at Texas A&M in the final game of the season kept the Horns out of a tie for the SWC title and a possible Cotton Bowl berth. 2/4
