Not that MAGA has ever needed much of a tactical incentive to demonize minorities. But going after Somali immigrants, for instance, now also serves an additional purpose by channeling MAGA aggression towards a “safe” target that all the different Trumpist factions can agree on.

That, however, also creates very dangerous incentives for MAGA: The only thing that might reintegrate the different factions now is probably a deliberate escalation of the struggle against the “enemy within” – or perhaps a gratuitous war against an enemy without.

This is likely to hurt MAGA in several respects. The authoritarian assault on the system will be hampered by infighting; and electorally, the type of ideological absoluteness that might emerge here is going to diminish their chances to compete in elections.

We should be expecting at a prolonged, chaotic, and dirty struggle between different radical factions and different shades of extremism. MAGA will probably emerge as a more ideological and more ideologically extreme movement.
