The Australian Human Rights Commission’s recent report on the experience of women in immigration detention highlighted that “during the inspection, the Commission was advised that the Department ‘does not have current guidelines that specifically outline the management of transgender detainees.”

In particular, Border Force’s focus on women who they believe are part of the Asian sex worker community (or believe they are being trafficked to be part of it) through its “Operation Inglenook” unfairly targets trans women who have legitimate reasons for visiting or staying in Australia.

The ABC reporting on recent cases of transgender women being profiled at border entry and detained despite valid tourist visas, over-surveilled within detention, being detained in male detention quarters until late last year, and feeling unsafe from both Serco staff and male detainees is horrifying.

A gay Afghan man with complex PTSD and a history of torture can be deported to an African country where he doesn’t speak the language and faces homophobic attitudes and social isolation. The only reason he is there is the $$$$$$ paid by the Australian taxpayer.

A person who has served their sentence in prison and been warehoused in detention for years can be traded to a country for $$ because they can’t be returned to their country of birth. Then that country could deport or detain them at will.

Mobile phones will be confiscated from people in detention to avoid trafficking drugs into detention. In the process, all means of private communication are stripped away.
