GWB bled support during his 2nd term because he simply became unable to project any perception of success, even to the base. Katrina was obviously a body blow, but the steady beat of stories like Libby, Mark Foley etc gave people the idea that he’d lost the plot.

Even if an overall flip isn’t realistic, getting things to a level where some more local races flip/become more competitive forces the party to spend resources they’d wouldn’t have spent otherwise.

Trump manages to avoid this to a degree because people dont expect a rich guy to pay for everyday things. But being dismissive is how it sticks.

Portnoy is a clown and is likely trolling but the I think it’s only a matter of time before someone harms a pro or college athlete over a gambling loss. Numerous athletes have said that they get harassed online and in real life by bettors over missed parlays etc.

Even back as “Patriot Games” you start to realize that Ryan is kind of a smarmy know-it-all, which only gets worse as the books progress. He does kind of acknowledge in one of the later books as POTUS that 9 strict constructionists on SCOTUS would be a nightmare.

One of the things I got from rereading Clancy as an adult is how much Ryan becomes a mouthpiece for his personal opinions as the series progresses.

The problem with replacing Sirianni is that the current power structure in Philadelphia doesn’t really allow for a strong head coach that can carry them through these rough spots. You’d only get another Sirianni/Pederson type figure instead of a Harbaugh or Payton.

Part of me thinks that these tech bros have concluded that drone usage in Ukraine reflects a paradigm shift when in reality it’s the result of both Russia/UKR attempting to alleviate shortages in conventional munitions.
