Super good idea 💡

interesting idea. i especially like the grabhandle. you should make a creature that has a lantern theming where it emits light from their eyes and mouth. but for this worldbuilding evercise i think it would be counter thematic to the final ''moth'' form (gorgon)

So i was thinking about this design some more, and what if instead of the head floating or having a neck piece connecting it to the body, what if the arms were used to hold the head

Oooh yeah that was the original idea, should def make the hands hold her hear in a much clear way

right, its one thing to note down the idea but the hard part is to make sense of it. I'd suggest you look into the ''design process'' and ''mindmapping'' its a method to organise initial ideas. This is mine from the Pale gate project

so like, i have another worldbuilding project in the works where i'm gonna have to actually study birds. i dont think i can just wing it with just ref images (no pun intented)

yess great stuff!!!

Yes that's very true, and you can never reach a state where you would be satisfied with this sort of art journey for sure. But yeah, a hunger to learn but ALSO really good observation skills is key imo

yeah thats a great trait to have to become a good concept artist. i suck at that i focus on shortcuts (which is really bad lol) (thats why i'm still really bad at anatomy)

No studies, but i did a lot of reference gathering before sketching

Just as an example, the genesis for the creature designs came from really goofy and messy sketches. This is basically step 1, where you have a rough idea in your head and you just need to put it down on paper so you don't forget later. These are scribblings that just serve as a memo

Pleasure! Im hoping i can share a lot more of my design process on here. Theres a lot of thinking envolved for me when i do these pieces so its not as glamorous as a beautiful illustration but if it can help people out i'm glad to share

This is my own personal work but i still like to add the header because it helps to unify multiple pages into 1 project if that makes sense. Its easier for a viewer to recognize that these concept spreads are a part of the same thing

The bar at the bottom is a graphic design element called a "header" its just used to document and title the page in question. In actual game studios you'll have the name of the project, the company logo, the artist's name, date, etc.

The ABC anotation is usually to show your art director so he can choose one of the variations and give feedback on specific sketches and whatnot

So basically, on a concept art spread like this, the A,B,C,etc is just to show different versions of the same concept. This is very much exploration phase where you test multiple ideas before choosing one final design. Its not related to the lore of the project

Tysm, yes the main challenge was merging the upper torso of a human to the caterpillar body since the scales are so different. Its almost inspired by realistic mermaids where their fish bodies are way larger in ratio. For silhouette, anything from the insect world is guaranteed to be striking :)

tysm, love your work as well, the Art Nouveau influence really shines with your stuff. It reminds me a bit of Terry Wei's work (which I also adore)
