🛩️ Parliament also condemned repeated and severe hybrid attacks from Belarus against Lithuania 🇱🇹, e.g. in the form of airspace violations and weaponized migration. The motion was authored jointly by PPE, GREENs, ECR, Renew and S&D. Only ESN voted against it by a majority.

MEPs called for stronger involvement of Parliament, stricter enforcement under clear guidelines, improved transparency and better protection for whistleblowers, among others.

Votes against almost exclusively from the far-right. Very clear voting behavior among all groups.

🧑‍⚖️ Today, Parliament adopted a Report on the "Implementation of the rule of law conditionality regime". The regime allows the EU to cut funding to member states as a reaction to breaches of the rule of law. Used only one time until now against Hungary, despite more breaches.

A welcome initiative and also a great example of (direct) democracy in action - this is the result of a European Citizen Initiative that got more than 1.2 Million signatures - congratulations to all involved!

We'll keep an eye on what the Commission does next!

🫄We begin with a vote that I missed yesterday - thanks to everyone who made us aware!

Progressives in Parliament voted in favor of an "EU-funded, voluntary solidarity mechanism to finance abortion care for women without access to safe and legal abortion"

🤖 Parliament also passed some (non-binding) suggestions on how potential upcoming EU legislation on algorithmic management should look like - emphasizing a right to be informed about data collection and prohibiting hiring decision solely made on the basis of algorithms.

🛢️ Not all was won by PfE and ESN though: MEPs voted in favor of gradually banning natural gas imports from Russia beginning in 2026 and called on the Commission to ban oil imports in 2027.

In a second vote, rules regarding the application of this list were also sent to the Council for negotiations.

❗❗Both votes succeeded due to votes from PfE (& ESN)

🚧 Parliament approved an EU-wide list of countries of safe origin for negotiations with the Council. Originating from the asylum and migration pact from 2024, humans from countries on this list would face (even more) significant challenges when applying for asylum in the EU.

🌳 The deforestation regulation that passed parliament with a far-right enabled majority last month came back from negotiations with the council and (somewhat unsurprisingly) passed similarly as the initial position last month. ❗ESN and PfE support were vital for adoption.

The procedural vote also makes the S&D position consistent: "We want a law (hence can't outright reject the proposal), but we want it changed. Unchanged, we won't agree."
December 17, 2025 at 9:48 PM
Hah, I just looked at this as well - exactly, the votes I posted were the only ones besides the procedural. And I missed that yesterday (never saw one of these before).

In case that would have been accepted, votes on the amendments would have been held & afterwards a final vote on the amended text.
December 17, 2025 at 9:48 PM
On that vote, there is quite an interesting split on the far-right side of Parliament: While the majority of PfE and ECR did not vote in favor of the text, a majority of ESN did.
Rarely seen that ESN isn't the most contrarian of these three.

🌱 While we are at majorities with the far-right & this sparked some debate last session: Two more votes on GMO maize, both adopted against the majority of the EPP and with votes of the far-right - but once more, their votes weren't required for passing.

While this vote was successful with a center-right majority, it's not exactly like the 🇻🇪-majority votes we observed last session - PfE and ESN voted in favor, but weren't needed for the majority, due to 14 S&D MEPs also voting in favor.
December 16, 2025 at 10:38 PM
⛓️ Parliament heavily weakened the Corporate sustainability reporting and due diligence requirements (EU-Lieferkettengesetz for the 🇩🇪 audience) with due diligence now only applying to large corporations.
