Remember your favorite creator possibly might be struggling with imposter syndrome and doubt and this timeline sucks.. so if you find yourself thinking “wow I really relate to this persons work” or that persons work gives you joy, you should probably tell them. It’s a hard time to be a creative.

since the "google is now training gemini on your email contents" thing keeps bumping around here: it's _not happening_. I say this not to defend google but because I know a lot of people that have broken their filtering and made their lives much more annoying from sheer misinformation.

The malwarebytes Google opting-your-emails-into-ai-training thing is not true. The post is based on one bad tweet.

I know anti-tech lamenting is a Bluesky core principle, but please use the same judgement you would for any other clickbait.

what if your foster mom was your best friend. then she gets banished to purgatory. and in the next ten years, you join the military like she did & fall in love with one of the enemy so YOU get banished. and then you find your foster mom again while exiled.

anyway, not wednesday but have a brief wip. im so so enamored with the character dynamics in this game yall

Silence falls over her as she studies the little one, wondering how it had ended up like this.

"Hedwyn--this is your new guardian, Captain Jodariel. She served on the Bloodborder with your father, when you were born." The representative from the local court gently nudges the boy forward and while he blinks owlishly at first, eyes wide as he takes in Jodariel's stern expression, he steps closer with almost no hesitation.

Most of the foundlings left in her care tended to shy away when first meeting their new guardian. Jodariel was aware that her demeanor was not one might expect from a foster mother, and that her time on the Bloodborder had only served to strengthen her stoic tendencies--it was to be expected that the children were scared of her, at first. They would warm to her, some more quickly than others, but all would be wary of her for some period of time at the beginning. She had grown used to it by now.

Hedwyn--a little one no older than six--is the first who shows practically no signs of fear. In fact, he offers a shy little smile to her. In the halting way children speak when first encountering a new word or name, he says, "Captain Jo...Jodari..."

She finds herself sinking to one knee, studying the boy's face curiously. "You may call me Jodi, if it is difficult for you to say."

That sends little Hedwyn's smile brightening, and he says with a child-like fondness, "Okay! Jodi." He says her name with bubbly warmth that matches the toothy grin on his face.

Jodariel's mouth curves up very faintly at the corners--children never failed to lift her spirits, with their wonder and excitement. Their innocence was so precious to her, and she cherished every moment like this that she was able to witness.

$“I like your hair.” Hedwyn says, already reaching out to touch the neat plait resting over her shoulder. Jodariel leans forward to allow him to take it in hand--she braids it every morning, pulling her hair from her face and the crown of her head to form the immaculate plait. It was easier to maintain than other styles while she was still on active duty, as the helm of their uniforms often left long hair disheveled or tangled. The habit stuck around even after her service ended. “It’s pretty.” Hedwyn says after a moment, nodding as if in approval. Jodariel cannot help the smile widening a fraction on her face. She holds out her hand, offering it to little Hedwyn, standing once he takes it. “Would you like to see your room?” Hedwyn nods, holding her hand in a tight grip that makes plain his nervousness--not something that could be seen in his expression, and Jodariel internally commends him for putting on such a brave face. In the face of turmoil--in the face of losing what little family of his remained--he was rising to meet it with a courage that even grown men sometimes lacked. With a brief glance at the court official to see if the boy’s things were ready to be brought in, Jodariel gently leads Hedwyn further into her home.$

As with most residences that could be paid for with a soldier’s salary, it was small and did not bear any of the grandeur that capitol dwellers often boasted of. The plastered walls were no longer the pristine white they surely once had been, and the rafters at the ceilings were beginning to show signs of their age. The furniture had all come to Jodariel second-hand once she had finished her tour on the Bloodborder, and the aged wood made that plain to see.

But in spite of it all, it was homey. The hearth in the kitchen was blazing merrily, and the smell of the fresh bread a neighbor had brought over early in the morning. The fabric hanging over the windows and covering the seat cushions was haphazardly dotted with colored thread in simple embroidered patterns; the woven blanket folded neatly at the foot of little Hedwyn’s bed was threadbare in places but still soft to the touch and could keep in the warmth on even the coldest winter nights.

Hedwyn is quiet as he drinks in everything in his new bedroom, which is modest but inviting like the rest of the house. Jodariel lets him pull away, her eyes drifting to the official trailing behind them with the rest of Hedwyn’s things. She steps out of the boy’s earshot, jaw tightening and the last remnants of her smile vanishing.
