Just seen the feature on Gardeners world, superb and with it your very important message. Hope it inspires more builders and estates to do something in their local community that promotes wildlife and biodiversity for the future.

Thank you for sharing, I know of them but haven’t seen one in the wild unfortunately, even when I have visited France. In the UK several horseflies have similar stunning eyes, but they do bite. We have two hoverflies with dotted eyes which are stunning to find, Eristalinus.aenus and sepulchralis.

It certainly is Scaeva pyrasti. It has those hockey stick markings on the abdomen. The green larva with white stripe down the centre. Love that the artist showed the larva capturing an aphid, holding it aloft and away from the plant such that it doesn’t alert the other aphids. Brilliant, Thank you.
