Foreign aid is dead (not really, but it's been a rough year). In its wake, there's a healthy pivot to talking about economic growth in poor countries. But in DC, that manifests as a fixation on private finance & too little talk about the real economy.

I think the vast majority of us want the same fundamental things but can be convinced we should not try to have/share in those policies. E.g., because there's not enough to go around and others are living the life you deserve.

Maybe I'm seeing what I want to. Or maybe the snow has me optimistic. ❄️

They do take some blame for helping Ceballos to register. (Though shade is properly thrown at the county clerk.)

But I'm still hopeful. Why they value their friend, why they chose him to be mayor, is important. Somehow we have to reconnect the value of voting for those virtues at higher levels.

Yet these people of Coldwater, KS who want the best for their friend, who they like so much they put him in charge, keep voting for officials against their friend.

As Clay emphasizes, none of these folks in the party of personal responsibility take any ownership for their votes (for Kris Kobach).

My best example here is this sequence about Mayor Ceballos:

"Politics bores his friend, Ryan Swayze said.

We asked Ceballos about this.

'Yeah,' he said. 'If politics comes up in Coldwater, I generally just get up and walk out.'"

And the others seem to like this about him.

I really appreciate that @pbsnews.org ended the interview with this graphic.

It captures, in the simplest and starkest terms, the brutal arithmetic driving this country's homelessness catastrophe.
