When I tried to fake illness as a child by running the thermometer under hot water, it broke and sent the mercury swirling around the basin. I tried to stop it with my bare fingers but it flew down the drain in a blink.

It’s been a long time since I read AOR. Stegner’s Shooting Star is dated in an interesting way. The audiobook narrator for Dance is really good. I can still hear him say Widmerpool (sp?).

I assume you listen to audiobooks? I went through all of Dance to the Music of Time while puzzling. Auster, Stegner, Murdoch, all good for puzzling.
