a big aspect of hdg is also its disability narrative, and how the affini are essentially caretakers who say they know whats best for a sophont, and they mean it. so mara thoroughly believed she was doing what was best for elvira, because she WAS, and elvira saw thst in the end

yeah so, when it comes to the implant, i cant remember how established its capabilities were in the original story, but it is genuinely like. a way for the affini owner to control every part of their floret. elvira was on a cocktail of drugs by the end of the story as well, even by the middle iirc

it can really vary. the earlier works are gonna be somewhat similar and then the ship of theseus happens and things change. is there something specific you didn't like about the original? could try to help find a story that better fits maybe
