They did probably use the road to build the dam, but once it was built it served no purpose so they abandoned it past the parking lot for the viewpoint. It's still very clearly an old road, and you can see the asphalt in places without digging. I just wanted to walk on old 504 for a little bit.

It wasn't really a hike, ha! I actually went off the trail to follow the roadbed. It's at the Retention Dam, well outside the National Volcanic Monument. The 504 Spur to the dam is the old road too, and you can easily follow the roadbed once you pass the vehicle fence.

Things only I care about: today on my way back from Mount St Helens, I walked some of the old roadbed of Washington St Highway 504, abandoned after the eruption.
