#Marvel pulled a fast one on #DC when they claimed the name #CaptainMarvel in 1967 when the character was created in #MarvelSuperHeroes #12 by #StanLee & #GeneColan. As a result, DC couldn't use the name for the original character, changing it to #Shazam.

#DC thought they finally caught #Marvel flatfooted when #StanLee had #AmazingSpider-Man #96-98 released without #CCA approval to tell an anti-drug story. However, when the story was praised for its message, not only did it lead to be CCA to be reformed but made DC look even more out of step.

Fun issue by #JasonAaron & #JuanFerrieyra that finds Superman taking on Hawkman who tries to recruit him, while Lois Lane gets a new job and Lex Luthor looks to be pulled into the fold.

#DC thought they scored a coup when they signed away #JackKirby from #Marvel, where he went on to create #TheNewGods. Unfortunately, it soon became apparent that, while Kirby's art was undeniable, his writing was missing something without #StanLee.

Unable to believe readers actually preferred #Marvel over #DC, DC's VP #IrwinDonenfeld had a checkerboard added to the tops of the DC books on April of 1966 so readers could distinguish them on the stands. It worked but in the opposite way, as readers knew to avoid those books.

An early controversy in the #Marvel/DC rivalry were the similarities between #TheDoomPatrol and #TheX-Men, the former which came out just a few months before the latter. The coincidence of a team of outcasts being lead by a leader in a wheel chair were striking.

An irony of the #Marvel/DC rivalry during the Silver Age was that the #IndependentNews, which distributed Marvel, was owned by DC and originally kept Marvel to 10 books a month. However, with Marvel's increased sales, it was raised to 14, as DC got a share of Marvel's profits.

#Marvel's success in the 1960's truly baffled #DC, with VP #IrwinDonenfeld even believing it was the covers or the use of the color red, and not that Marvel was producing more exciting & original books at the time.

The seeds of the #Marvel/DC rivalry began when #MartinGoodman, the owner of Marvel, ordered #StanLee to create a superhero team to compete with DC's #JusticeLeague. With #JackKirby, Lee came up with the #FantasticFour, a superhero team like no other that would soon be giving DC a run for its money.

Great one-shot story after the "Dreadnok War" by #JoshuaWilliamson & #MarcoFodera that focuses on Roadblock, a retired soldier that only wants to work at his food truck, only for the Crimson Twins to have different ideas.

On December of 1996, Marvel Comics filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, having lost millions relying on the now dead speculator market in comics. It was easily rock bottom for the #SpeculationCrash.
January 29, 2026 at 2:01 AM
The release of #TheAdventuresofSuperman" #500, which affirmed Superman was not dead, broke the speculator market and the value of "Superman" #75. Realizing comics were not the sound investment once believed, the speculators left and nearly took the comic industry with it.

The beginning of the Speculation Crash came with the "Death of Superman" event that wrapped with "Superman" #75 on Nov. 18th, 1992. While initially successful with 6 million in sales, comic book stores found themselves overstocked with the comics, like many other event comics.

Another factor that fueled the #SpeculationCrash was the rise of comic book price guides, notably
#Wizard magazine, which while did a great job promoting the medium, also listed the prices of comics for collectors to seek out, with some even claiming comics were a better investment than stocks.

During the 1980's, many thought comics were a 'solid investment', leading to collectors to seek them out. Publishers fed this market with new numbers, featuring various covers or trading cards. While initially successful, it set a bad trend for the industry.

The seeds of the 1990's #SpeculationCrash began when #PhilSeuling founded #SeaGateDistributors in 1972, allowing stores to buy comics directing from the publishers, thus birthing the #directmarket.

Another great issue from #RyanNorth & #HumbertoRamos as the #FantasticFour decide to set off to find Galactus after the mysterious message saying he needed to find Sue Storm but not before making plans to look after Alicia and their children.

Great conclusion to the #DreadnokWar by #JoshuaWilliamson & #TomReilly as the conflict concludes with sides chosen and secrets revealed.

#FrankMiller's "300" would be adapted into a highly successful movie by director #ZackSnyder, that for better or worse launched Snyder's career as a comic book movie director....https://youtu.be/B6UT5Uur2v8?si=yx8hqJZFngnRZbDa
