On Nov 18, 1929, a 7.2 Grand Banks earthquake triggered a submarine landslide and a tsunami up to 13 m high, devastating Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula and taking 28 lives (updated).

Since 1921, Canadians have sombrely reflected every November 11th on the horrors of war and pledged “never again” in honour of those veterans who’ve paid the ultimate sacrifice.

On November 7, 1885, Donald Smith, a CPR director, drove the ceremonial last spike into the railway, British Columbia. This act symbolized the completion of the transcontinental line.

Retired Judge Corrine Sparks, MSVU alumna and Canada’s first Black woman judge, broke barriers in law and education. Her work on R. v. S. (R.D.) changed how Canada views racial bias. MSVU honoured her in 2023 with an Honorary Degree. #WomensHistoryMonth

Dr. Corey Slumkoski’s HIST 4481 class recently visited the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. Pier 21 historian, Steve Schwinghamer, offered a thought-provoking presentation that problematized the practice of public history by reflecting on what stories get told and why.
